{DIY} Revamping our Dining Set

When old meets new!

Before we moved into our new place we sold our old dining set
While completely functional,
our old dining set was small and somewhat juvenile.
And MAN did I hate how high the set was.
Having your feet swing at dinner
and not able to touch the ground is not a fun feeling,
especially when your short to begin with! {But, I digress}
So....we looked to upgrade our set,
without upgrading the price.
Never an easy feat....but always do-able
Insert our AWESOME garage sale find...
When Stephen and I were in the process of moving items out of his parent's house
we spotted this gem at a garage sale right down the road!
I started by lightly sanding the entire set with a 180 grit sandpaper
and wiped it down with mineral spirits.
I then slapped on some Zinsser Cover Stain Primer....
like literally just slapped it on.
During the priming step I should've realized this was going to be no easy feat
I worked late into the night and it was a major struggle to finish that
LAST. chair.
I let the set sit for about 3 days.
Not to let it "cure" or anything special like that
Just to re-coup and get up the gusto to paint
After the first coat of Rust-Oleum Protective Enamel White Satin paint,
 the set looked AWFUL!
I was sooooo disappointed
The paint looked streaky and not a very vibrant white.
Feeling defeated, I let the set sit over Thanksgiving break for another 3 days.
However the second coat of paint, while not easy, made ALL the difference
I actually ended up painting the table top with 3 coats of paint
Partially for protection purposes and partially b/c I'm OCD
Now for the ugly seat cushions.
Because our seat cushions were in fairly good shape
{and b/c we didn't want to take on the daunting task of
completely re-upholstering all 6 cushions}
we decided to just recover the seats instead.
We cut a piece of our fabric to the size of the seat cushion.
We folded and stapled each side with one staple in the center
We then tackled the corners.
I must preface this with the fact that it was 12am and Stephen and I were completely exhausted
So, there was no real rhyme or reason as to how we recovered these cushions.
We actually ended up using a modified version of this tutorial here.
And this was the end result.
We LOVE our new {to us} dining set and have already broken it in with a few family dinners.
It's so nice to have somewhere to sit and eat....
especially since we've been eating on the floor pretty much since we moved in!
Until our next DIY.....

  3. I completely understand the whole feet dangle thing. God knows I can't stand it, it's like a big girl high chair. It took me 26 years to get this tall to finally have my feet hit the floors in regular chairs...but like you said digress...did I spell that right? - Mellissa
